The Road Less Traveled: Old Highway 71
The businesses and communities along Highway 71 in northwest Arkansas struggle to adapt to slower traffic after an Interstate opened. Winslow manages to keep their town alive by working together and embracing everything that keeps them unique.
A Documentary Film by Brooke McNeely Galligan and Gary Morris-Mansee
First-time filmmakers Brooke McNeely Galligan and Gary Morris-Mansee present the documentary film "The Road Less Traveled: Old Highway 71”, about the Arkansas 71 Scenic Bypass and the businesses still open in the town of Winslow. The film features personal stories of business owners and residents about the opening of I-540 in 1999, how it affected them and what they do now to keep customers coming back. Fall in love with the small, unique community that hasn’t changed much over the years. In fact, they embrace their quirkiness and quiet way of life.
The Road Less Traveled is a documentary film written and produced by Brooke McNeely Galligan and Gary Morris-Mansee, with music and narration by the local folk band 3 Penny Acre. The band created an album called "Highway 71", which was inspired by the old highway. Now, the two mediums combined create a rich sense of life in the rural Boston Mountains. Both Brooke and Gary are part of the University of Arkansas' documentary film class, under the instruction of Larry Foley and Carmen Coustaut. Old Highway 71 runs through Winslow, Arkansas, which is nestled in the Boston Mountains. Many shops and motels used to line the road, in the highest and most rugged peaks of the Ozarks. Only a few family owned businesses remain along the scenic bypass. What was once a bustling highway is now the road less traveled.
The film has been selected to be shown at the Eureka Springs Indie Film Festival. We are excited to share our story with the rest of the state. In the meantime explore the site, watch the trailers and visit the quirky businesses along Highway 71 in Winslow.
